Most people know that Florida health insurance has a set enrollment window each fall — Open Enrollment runs November 1 through January 15. But what many Florida residents don't realize is that you can enroll at any time of year if you've experienced a qualifying life event. This is called a Special Enrollment Period, or SEP, and it gives you a 60-day window to get covered.
What Is Open Enrollment?
Open Enrollment is the annual period when any Florida resident can apply for a new ACA marketplace plan, switch plans, or renew existing coverage. If you enroll by December 15, coverage begins January 1. Enrollment between December 16 and January 15 starts February 1. Outside this window, your options depend entirely on whether you have a qualifying event.
What Is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period opens a 60-day window to enroll in or change your ACA marketplace plan. The clock starts on the date of your qualifying life event. If you miss the 60-day window, you generally must wait until the next Open Enrollment period — so acting quickly matters.
Qualifying Life Events for Florida Residents
-
Losing job-based health coverage Laid off, fired, or left a job — if you lose employer-sponsored health insurance, you qualify immediately. This includes losing coverage from a spouse's employer plan.
-
Moving to a new coverage area Relocating to a new Florida county or moving to Florida from another state opens a SEP, provided you had prior coverage in your previous location.
-
Marriage Getting married allows you and your new spouse to enroll or change coverage within 60 days of the wedding date.
-
Divorce or legal separation If you lose coverage because of a divorce, you qualify for a SEP to get your own plan.
-
Birth, adoption, or placement of a child Adding a dependent to your household always triggers a SEP, and the new child can be enrolled retroactively from the date of birth or adoption.
-
Turning 26 and losing parents' coverage Adults who age off a parent's plan on their 26th birthday have 60 days to enroll in their own marketplace plan.
-
Gaining citizenship or immigration status Becoming a U.S. citizen or receiving a qualifying immigration status opens a SEP for marketplace enrollment.
-
Losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility If your income increases and you no longer qualify for Florida Medicaid, you can transition directly to a marketplace plan with subsidies.
How to Apply During a Special Enrollment Period
The application process is the same as during Open Enrollment — you apply through healthcare.gov. The key difference is that you will be asked to document your qualifying event. Upload supporting paperwork (such as a job separation notice, marriage certificate, or proof of new address) when prompted. If you are working with a licensed agent, they can submit this documentation on your behalf.
What If You Miss Your 60-Day SEP Window?
If you miss the 60-day window after your qualifying event, you will typically need to wait for the next Open Enrollment period (November 1 – January 15) to enroll. During the gap, you may be uninsured or need to explore short-term coverage options. If you think you may have missed a SEP, call us — there are sometimes exceptions and additional event types that may apply to your situation.
